Irene M. (Dutzer) Decker

Irene M. (nee Dutzer) Decker, 90, of Palmyra, PA, formerly of Verona and Belleville, NJ, passed away on Friday, December 17, 2020.

Guests will be received at the Irvine-Cozzarelli-Memorial Home (973-759-1114), 276 Washington Avenue, Belleville, NJ, on Tuesday morning, December 22, 2020 from 9:00 o'clock until 12:00 o'clock in the afternoon. Parking assistance will be available at the funeral home. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 12:00 o'clock with Pastor Vivian Roderffer officiating. Entombment will be in Hollywood Memorial Park, Union, NJ.

Mrs. Decker was born on March 12, 1930 in Brooklyn N.Y. to Michael & Helen (nee Hydock) Dutzer. She had lived in Richmond Hill, NY before moving to Belleville, NJ in 1956 until 1994. Subsequently Irene moved to Verona, NJ until 2018 prior to settling in Palmyra, PA.

Mrs. Decker was employed by the Township of Belleville, Department of Public Safety as the Executive Secretary for 33 years. She had served as the Deputy Director of Emergency Management in Belleville.

She was a member and past president of various Wesley Methodist Church Boards, in addition to being a lay leader at Wesley, she was also a past chairperson of the Nutley Family Service Bureau, and a past chairperson of Newark Family Services.

Additionally, she was past president of various political and social organizations and the Belleville PTA. Irene enjoyed the creative process as a ceramist / crafter. After Irene's retirement she became a tour director with AAA, then a tour director for Traveling Friends, an affiliation that lasted for 15 years. In 2004 Irene founded Wesley Group Tours which she operated until 2010.

A descriptive of Irene's personality would characterize her as a charming, wonderful, welcoming individual who always saved time for her family and friends. She was a confidant, A leader, and a trusted individual that always had seen things through. A great conversationalist with a wonderful smile that would embrace you and make you feel secure.

Christmas was paramount in Irene's life, a point of fulfillment, joy, and of holy celebration.

Irene was the former wife of the late Robert "Buddy” Decker; mother of Jeffrey Decker & his wife, Lori, Karl Decker & his wife, Dorothy, the late Donald Decker, and the late Craig Decker; grandmother of Michelle, Ryan, and Bobby. Also survived by many dear friends.
